Magnetic repulsion. Image 1 of 3. Iron filings (black specs) sprinkled on a surface with two bar magnets underneath it. Bar magnets have a north and a south pole. Like poles repel each other and the filings show the repulsion as field lines arcing away from the ends of the magnets. The lines do not actually exist, as the magnetic field is continuous, but attractions between the filings make them arrange themselves into thin arcs. For an image of the field shape between attracting magnets, see A230/0168 and A230/0169.
