Perceiving that theywere Indians that had attacked the house, he ran to a neighborfor aid, hastening back only to find that his mother had beentomahawked and his brother killed. Joseph Cloyd in about 1774 or 1775, when quite a young man,came with Colonel William Preston to the Drapers Meadowssettlement. Joseph Cloydwas a soldier in the American army during the Revolution, andMajor of the Montgomery County militia. In the year of 1780there was a great tory uprising in the northern counties ofNorth Carolina, consequent upon the advance of the Britisharmy into that state in October of that year.
