An illustrated history of the State of Iowa : being a complete civil, political, and military history of the state, from its first exploration down to 1875; including a cyclopaedia of legislation during the administration of each of the governors, from Lucas (1836) to Carpenter; with historical and descriptive sketches of each county in the state separately, embracing interesting narratives of pioneer life, including an account of the commercial, agricultural and educational growth of Iowa . Magnesian limestone, which permitsof a very beautiful polish, is one of thevarieties. The likeness of this stoneto marble would suggest the samenessof the elements of which it is com-posed, even though scientists hadnever revealed that interesting of this stone are frequenton the banks of the Maquoketa andalong some of its branches. Awayback trom the rivers the rock is cov-ered by a heavy and rich coating ofsoil, but wherever search is made be-neath the mantle of fertility the rockopens out of a pale yellow or Frenchwhite. The stone is harder than thefamous Anamosa variety, but quiteeasily worked. Delhi, Colesburg andHopkinton near Manchester, are thesites of excellent quarries of the samestone. Nearer the streams the soilcovering the rock is necessarily thin-ner and in some places the treasurestands revealed, bald headed, as a newborn babe. There is an excellentflagging found in this county, verydurable and even, and not readily lia-ble to disintegration. Good lime can.
