. Electric railway journal . ncy Methods Every desk in the office of the Denver Tramway Com-pany engineering department is arranged so that thereis a uniform place in each for certain things. Conse-quently in the absence of any man another can go to hisdesk and readily find any matter of company applies to the chief engineer, Edward A. West, aswell as to all of his assistants. He is firmly of theopinion, and the engineering department works on thisbasis, that no man can handle more than one subject ata time and that consequently there should be but oneorder of business on the desk before him at any uniform arrangement of the desk and concentra-tion upon one item at a time eliminates the frequentoccurrence of a matter getting lost in the pile, andfacilitates the rapid movement of company businessthrough the engineering department. It thus becomes easily possible for any man to clearhis desk before leaving at any time, since he has onlyone order of business before him and there is a place in. OLI> FILES REBUILT TO UNIFORM DIMENSIONS his desk assigned to this in case it must be held. Asa result of this, every desk is entirely free of papersand the like when not actively in use. In the chief engineers office, where frequent refer-ence to various maps is necessary, these are kept fromcluttering the desk by having them mounted in a wingcabinet supported on one wall. The number of wingsin this cabinet is governed by the number of mapswhich are in active use. If reference to any one ofthese is required it may be lifted from its support andlaid on the desk for study. When returned, the cabinetis closed up, forming simply a piece of furniture withno prints or paper in evidence. Filing System Employed Working along the line of systematization of all theengineering departments business, all individual filesof the department which were previously distributedamong the several division heads and the chief engineerare now concentrated in one general file
