When only a few plants are grown, a tight board covering will be found convenient for keep- ing the roots dry and dormant. For winter protection it is advisable to give a liberal covering of litter. Ex- cessive moisture will destroy the crown. Flowering specimens can hardly be expected within 4 years from seed, and .seeds are slow to germinate unless fresh.
