Sun spot reflected on a solar panel. This array of photovoltaic cells forms a module for a solar panel. The dark blue areas are the individual crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, joined together by electrodes and encased in an aluminium and glass frame. Photovoltaic cells are the basic components of solar panels. They contain silicon, a semiconductor material that absorbs energy from sunlight and converts it into an electrical current.
