Grant became lieutenant-general of the army, Halleck remainedat Washington as chief of staff from March 12, 1864, to April 19, 1865,and from April 22 to July i of the latter year was in command of themilitary division of the James with headquarters at Richmond. On he took command of the division of the Pacific, from which he wasrelieved by Gen. George H. Thomas, and on March 16, 1869, was trans-ferred to that of the South, with headquarters at Louisville, Ky. died at Louisville, Jan. 9, 1872. Hamblin, Joseph E., brigadier-general, was born in Yarmouth, Mass.,in 1828,
