None of these arteries of the cortexanastomose with one another, nor do the veins communicate to anyconsiderable extent. As a result, each little territory of the cortexhas its own nutrient blood supply, entirely separate from that ofcontiguous territories, so that embolism, or disease of the arterydistributed to a certain territory, means the death of that area ofbrain substance whenever occlusion has become complete.
