He prepared for college at theNewton Academy, Shoreham, Vt.,and entered the Universitj in Sept-ember, 1856, and graduated B. S., in1859; was a member of the ParthenonSociety and the A 2 II Fraternity. He was commissioned 2d lieu-tenant, U. S. Marine Corps, June 5,1861, and was stationed at the MarineBarracks, Washington, D. C, untilJuly, 1861, when his company wasordered to join the Army of thePotomac in Virginia.
