This energetic monarch planted about Paris a large groveof mulberry-trees under the direction of Ollivier de Serres,a skilled agriculturist, distributed the eggs, and offeredbounties for silk and the most productive trees. The ex-periment failed, and the people, irritated by the loss ofprofit, rooted up the trees, destroyed the worms, and gaveup the industry. Persisting, however, the king converted a large orangegrove on his own estate into a mulberry grove, and soonhad a quantity of silk. His success shamed the peoplewho had given up silk growing, and they resumed the
