But it appears that the citizens were inhaste to return to their occupations, which had beensuspended by the recent calamity; they wc-e fondof the former situations of streets and buildings;and, above all, the architects proposed plan was avery expensive one, including no small sacrifice ofprivate property. Under these circumstances, wecan scarcely wonder, and have only to regret, thatthe plan was rejected. The city rose once more fromits ashes : the streets were wider than before, butunmarked, in general, by elegance of architec-ture, or regularity of design. Still, however, thesudden destruction of so many parish churches, andvarious public buildings, furnished ample
