A yeoman of the guard attending Queen Elizabeth on a progress. He wears the uniform of the time of Henry VIII, with scarlet coat with blue trim, rich badges of rose and crown on front and back, scarlet breeches with blue trim, black velvet cap with colorful plumes. "The yeoman of the guard were raised by Henry VIII in the year 1485." The print is copied from a work entitled "Diversarum Gentium Armatura Equestris" by Nicholai Johanni Vischeri 1617. Copperplate engraving from Francis Grose's "Military Antiquities: Respecting a History of the English Army From the Conquest to the Present Time: A New Edition with Material Additions and Improvements" 1812. Francis Grose (1731-1791) was an army officer who served in the cavalry, infantry, and militia. A keen amateur military historian, he was able to move and observe among the rank and file of the army and to gain access to the curio cabinets of the gentry. He also wrote two dictionaries of slang and cant.
