The Royal Pump Rooms, Harrogate on a snowy evening viewed from the Valley Gardens

Since the first mineral spring was discovered in 1571, the area that was to become Harrogate began to attract visitors. Today there are around 100 known springs, including the infamous sulphur wells, the strongest in Europe. The Royal Pump Rooms were built in 1842 to shelter affluent visitors as they took the waters. Today the Royal Pump Rooms house a museum where it is still possible to experience the sulphur water, if you dare!
