Heart microsurgery. View of a two surgeons conducting open heart microsurgery. They are wearing modified magnifying glasses on their eyes, and the surgeon on the left has a headlamp strapped to his head. During open heart surgery the heart is stopped, so a heart-lung machine is needed to oxygenate the blood. A tube full of blood can be seen (lower left) leading to, or coming from, the heart-lung machine. Usually the body is cooled down to allow more time for delicate operations. Heart microsurgery is performed to treat defective heart valves, repair congenital defects and to carry out coronary bypasses.
