The illustrations for Samuel Butler's epic poem 'Hudibras' are William Hogarth's first published set of original engravings. The scene depicts Hudibras himself and his squire in the stocks after their latest misadventure and loss to the woman Trulla, with Hudibras’ overly-large boots, hat, gun and sword on top of the is a 19th Century version engraved by J. Romney from the original picture by Hogarth.
