Thimphu is the capital and largest city of Bhutan, and is located at 2,248m to 2,648m above sea-level, the fifth highest capital in the world by altitude. Tashichö Dzong ('Fortress of the Glorious Religion'), the 17th-century fortress-monastery, located on the northern edge of the city, has been the seat of the government since 1952 and presently houses the throne room and offices of the king, the secretariat and the ministries of home affairs and finance.
