Body much compressed, orbicular; head short, anterior profile obtuse; cau- dal peduncle slender, without keel; mouth terminal, oblique, jaws about equal; lateral line arched, continuous; dorsal fin long, with anterior rays muclvelongated, anal fin similar; caudal fin large and strongly forked; pectorals long and narrow; ventrals absent, represented by a single sharp spine attached to pubic bone.
