Wolf-Rayet star 124, JWST image


James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) image of Wolf-Rayet 124 (WR 124), a star that is 15,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Sagitta. This is a phase that some massive stars go through before exploding in a supernova. Surrounding WR 124 is a nebula made of material cast off from the aging star in random ejections, and from dust produced in the ensuing turbulence. Material ejected from the star includes heavy metals, which could go on to form the building blocks of future stars and planets. Composite image obtained by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the JWST.
