Sthrs. Carhon dioxide content of the blood.—In view of the decreased alka-linity of the blood wliich has been reported in cholera, it would naturally1)6 of interest to determine its carbon dioxide content. In selecting amethod for carbon dioxide determinations of the blood it must be remem-bered that none of the various procedures are free from error. Thegravimetric method was used in the following determinations, accordingto the technique of Kraus. (4) 101001- 5 66 SELLARDS AND SHAKLEE. Blood was withdrawn with an ordinary syringe from a superficial vein of thearm below an Esmarch bandage and defibrinated with glass beads in a closedflask. The pressure throughout the apparatus was reduced to 16 three to four times the theoretical amount of sulphuric acid wasadded using a 1 per cent solution instead of the more concentrated acid recom-mended by Kraus. After the addition of the acid, the apparatus was washedwith air under the reduced pressure until th
