Maidenhair spleenwort. 16th century Italian illustration of the maidenhair spleenwort fern (Asplenium trichomanes), by Gherardo Cibo, 1568. Maidenhair spleenwort is a medicinal plant used as an expectorant, a laxative, in the treatment of chest complaints, and to promote menstruation. This plate is taken from Discorsi on Dioscorides' De Materia Medica by Pietro Andrea Mattioli, a work of herbal medicine first published in Italy in 1554.
