The pit head winding gear, La Maison du Mineur, La Grand’Combe, Gard, France.


This pit head winding gear is part of the old mining museum at La Grand’ Combe in the Cevennes region of the Gard in southern France. Near to the pit head winding gear is the winding room where a miner controlled the ascent and descent of the pit cage. The brick building at the foot of the pit head is where men went into the mine and coal was brought out in museum is housed in part of the old Puits Ricard mine. All of the artefacts in the museum are of the region and have been collected to save them from destruction. The museum has been granted “Monument Historique” status in France. The museum was renovated in 2001.
