Worshippers of the Santa Muerte cult gather for Sunday services

True believers of the rapidly growing cult of the Santa Muerte or Holy Death venerate a female grim reaper figure that carries a scythe in one hand and a globe of the world in the other While the cult has gained fame as a refuge and source of favors for robbers drug dealers and other nefarious characters it also has attracted a wide following amongst lower class Mexicans who looking for alternative ways to manifest their spirituality While many of the faithful profess to be Catholics the Church itself has condemned worship of the figure branding it a form of Satanism The Temple of the International Group of the Santa Muerte in Tultitlán State of México México has a 75 foot fiberglass statue of the Holy Death on it s grounds Every Sunday the faithful gather for a prayer and benediction service at the foot of the monumental figure
