Eclipsing binary star diagrams, 19th-century popular science journal page. The diagrams show the eclipsing of the variable star Algol by an orbiting satellite. This theory to explain the variability in the brightness of the star was proved correct by spectroscopic observations made in 1889. These proved that a second star orbiting Algol caused the periodic changes in brightness.
