. Old love stories retold. dsteal out of the house — to was her weak and witless depend- Lassalle and Helene von Donnigesence on circumstances. But the issuewas to be otherwise. At the first ex-change of shots, Lassalle was fatallywounded; and he died two days later —August .51, 1864 — aged thirty-nine yearsand five months. He is buried in theJewish cemetery at Breslau, and on theheadstone is this short epitaph: Here rests what was mortal ofFerdinand Lassalle,Thinker and Fighter. So a weak woman and a tyrannicalfather had brought to nothing one of thestrongest personalities and the most valu-able intellects of the nineteenth ended that stormy, starry wooing ofthat night in May; and surely there neverwas a story filled with more cruel reading, with so much pitiful matter of wantonlytangled complication, and, it would seem, easily avoidable tragic mistakes. Cer-tainly no story in the history of love moreterribly illustrates the mad and criminalfolly of arbitrary interference with that.
