Thevalues deduced under a series of repeated load and impact testswill probably increase the values in the figure to some working stresses of one-seventh to one-fifth the breaking load,it is believed, the modulus of 12 000 000 pounds per square inchwill insure a sufficient safe margin in the calculation of bending In >Q IO O 7 * 5* 3 Set fe Modu I us for cc/Jc u /a ftngbending stresses =72 000 Afoc/<y/i/s ofWtres from cct6/es 22 -26 000 000Mocfo/us of uncotfee/W/re 28-29000 000 6X y Rope 12 \4r Diet meter of Cable Fig. 12.—Moduli of elasticity for cables of different typesand diameters stresses until more detailed information can be furnished fromtests made under kinetic conditions of loading, and a study ofthe behaviors of bending over sheaves in service tests is possible. VII. QUALITIES OF MATERIAL IN PLOW-STEEL CABLES In view of the relative importance of plow steel for hoistingrope, and the fact that the larger number of cables tested were ofthis steel, a comparative analysis of the materials of plow-steelropes furnished by different manufacturers was made as the basisof the investigation. The data given upon fibers and lubri-cants of rope cores are doubtless fairly representative of the entire Tests of Wire Rope 57 series of cables. While the chemical constituents of the steel willvary in different cables, the range
