Goodwood Races: Tim Whiffler, the winner of the Goodwood Cup, 1862. 'The early career of this celebrated colt, who is quite the three-year-old of 1862, and would have ruined the St. Leger betting if he had been entered, was not very prosperous, as he ran eleven times, and only won a Juvenile Handicap of £116 at Stockton. He is half- brother to Oldminster, and by Van Galen (a son of Van Tromp), who belonged to his breeder, Mr. Fobert, the celebrated Middleham trainer. Tim was exchanged when a yearling for Homeward Bound, and his sire, who never became fashionable, was sold to the landlord

Tim was exchanged when a yearling for Homeward Bound, and his sire, who never became fashionable, was sold to the landlord of a little village inn in Wensleydale. His Chester Cup victory, under 6st. 11lb., was an exceedingly clever one, but "The Squire of Oran" had no idea of his being idle under his honours, as he ran twice and won twice at Malton, before the month was out. In June he was beaten a head by Ivanhoff at 18lb. for the Manchester Trades' Cup; but the next week found him as fresh as ever, and defeating Carbineer by the same distance, and at 1lb. worse terms for her Majesty's Gold Vase and £200 at Ascot. Unfortunately for Lord William Powlett, who purchased him for, as rumour has it, £2500, he was not in the Ascot Cup'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
