In gelatin-stick cultures liquefaction progresses much morerapidly than in similar cultures of the cholera spirillum, and a stocking-shaped pouch of liquefied gelatin, already seen after forty-eight hours,is filled with a cloudy liquid. The liquefaction increases, and intwenty-four hours more reaches the sides of the tube in the upper partof the medium; by the end of the week the gelatin is usually completelyliquefied. Upon the surface of the liquefied medium a whitish filmis seen. Upon agar there is a somewhat more luxuriant growththan is seen with the cholera vibrio. Upon potato this spirillum growsat room temperature and produces a slimy, grayish-yellow, glisteninglayer which soon extends over the entire surface.
