Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) the Swiss psychiatrist, autographed photograph. Jung was a disciple of Freud's for five years until he broke away in 1912. While he found Freud's explanations in terms of infantile sexuality acceptable for neuroses such as hysteria, he rejected the view that they could fully explain more serious disorders such as schizophrenia. His influence has been less than Freud's although he did popularise such concepts as 'introvert' and 'extrovert' and he also formulated the idea of a 'collective unconscious' as a consequence of following his interest in primitive myths.
