Bamboo plant cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the walls of plant cells (oblong) from a bamboo (family Gramineae). Unlike animal cells, plant cells are enclosed in a protective rigid cell wall. Channels (round) in the walls, known as plasmodesmata, allow transport and communication between the cells.
