The blue Egyptian water lily, Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea, engraved by Stadtler after an original painting by Peter Henderson. From Dr. Robert Thorton's The Temple of Flora, 1812, Lottery or quarto edition. The illustrations were a mix of aquatint, mezzotint and stipple engravings finished by hand. Dr. Thornton (1768?-1837) was a botanist and publisher who bankrupted himself producing what is now regarded as the greatest English botanical book.
