False-colour transmission electron micrograph of Entamoeba histolytica, a parasitic amoeba, seen ingesting & digesting human red blood cells (green ovals). The protozoa invades & destroys the tissues of the intestines, causing amoebic dysentery & ulceration to the wall. They may spread to the liver causing abscesses to develop. The infection is acquired through contamination of food or water or through the agency of flies. The white/green oval with a blue and pink central circular area (bottom left) is the nucleus of the cell. Magnification: x830 at size.
