Arabic Marketplace in Abbasid Times

This illustration shows two older men (at right) and three women (left) in a marketplace, using the structure in the background as a reference point. The Arabic text is vague. It refers to the men as wondering about the women at left who were veiled but are now showing their faces, and the men see them differently from what they thought. The time period is that of the Abbasid Empire whose dates are 720-1258. This miniature by al Hariri, an Arabian scholar of Arabic language and literature and a government official who lived in the 13th century , is now housed in Cairo, Egypt.
