Not often is the Red-head taken in northernNew England waters; a little more commonalong the southern coast, and gradually in-creasing in numbers southward until in theChesapeake and Delaware bays it is one of thecommonest of the ducks. It is found duringsome season of the year more or less abun-dantly all over North America and is every-where held in highest esteem. The breeding birds are generally at home inthe far north, mainly to the west and northwest. Q< UJ XQuj THE EED-HEAD 327 of Hudson Bay, the great duck nursery of theNew World, though a comparatively smallnumber breed in the northern States of theUnion, and in the Rocky Mountain region muchfarther south. There is small doubt that manybirds, especially of the duck tribe, which arecredited with breeding only in the far-off north,occasionally nest in the cool heights of themountains in much lower latitudes. Closely resembling the canvasback in appear-ance and fully equal to this much-lauded birdin table qualities when the same opportunitiesare given, the Red-head is often sold in the mar-kets as his highly esteemed relative. The like-ness between the two birds might, indeed, de-ceive the casual observer, but no one at all fa-miliar with them should ever mistake one forthe other.
