Public health papers and reports presented at the ... annual meeting of the American Public Health act, but the classification of thesemore highly organized bacteria is a subject that stands much in need ofrevisiou. In the systematic classifications that have been proposed from time totime, the genus Cladothrix has been allowed to stand unchanged in itsessential particulars and is usually regarded as the highest specializedtype of bacterial life. In some of the proposed systems the absence ofendospores and the presence of a gelatinous sheath have been added tothe differential characters of the genus. In studying, in 1891, the bacterial flora of the Mediterranean sea inthe vicinity of Naples, one of the prevalent forms that came under mynotice was a filamentous organism that possessed a growth peculiaritythat recalled the cladothrix type. The filaments of the developing colonygrew out as simple uniform threads arranged usually in a radiatiug man-ner. These threads at first were straight and continuous, but sooner orlater they would break in two at one or more points. The broken ends. Fig. i. Cladothrix dichotoma, Cohn, show- Fig. 2. METHOD OF BRANCHING IN GENUS CLADOTHRIX. 409 of the separated filament coutinned to grow, the apical end of the proxi-mal portion developing unusually more rapidly than the basal part of thedistal end of the filament. Sometimes the developing threads wouldapproximate each other, forming strands that might or might not betwisted around each other. In gelatin cultures especially, the growth ofboth ends of the broken filament usually diverged at an acute angle fromthe original thread. This gave rise to a series of branches of apeculiar sort that are closely related to those of Cladothrix dicho-toma, the main difference being that in Cladothrix dichotoma, there waslittle or no growth of the basal end of
