Turkey: The Prophet Muhammad and the Muslim army at the Battle of Uhud in 625. Miniature painting from Al-Darir's 'Siyer-i-Nebi (Life of the Prophet)', c. 1594. The painting was commissioned by the Ottoman sultan Murad III. Muhammad is represented veiled, according to Muslim convention. The Battle of Uhud (23 March 625) happened in the valley north of Mount Uhud, during the Muslim-Quraysh War. Abu Sufyan ibn Harb of the Qurayshi Meccans led an army towards Muhmmad's stronghold in Medina, and defeated the Muslims in battle, the only defeat the Muslims faced throughout the war.
