Artemis of Ephesus. Roman alabaster statue from the 2nd century AD from the Farnese Collection on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Campania, Italy. Head and hands in bronze were added by Italian sculptor Giuseppe Valadier during the restorations in the 19th century. The bust of the statue is covered with four rows of rounded protuberances, wrongly interpreted as the goddess's breasts. In fact they represent the scrota of bulls, victims of sacrifices.
