Channel Tunnel breakthrough using roadheader excavators under Castle Hill at the Eurotunnel UK Terminal at Folkestone.

Although most of the tunnels on the Channel Tunnel project were excavated using huge boring machines, a short section at the entrance to the Eurotunnel Terminal in Folkestone was completed using a traditional Vorst Alpine roadheader excavator with revolving teeth at the end of a flexible arm. This was at Castle Hill which was an area of ancient slippage that required special stabilisation techniques ahead of the tunnelling. The Channel Tunnel was the greatest construction project of the 20th century and is considered one of the wonders of the modern age.
