A bald breed of mice (Mus muscula), specially bred at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee. These mice, in addition to being hairless, have no functioning thymus gland and are therefore unable to produce foreign tissue immune system chemicals. The mice are used to study the effects of carcinogens in industrial waste on mammals. They may have carcinogens injected into them, or may have samples of human tumours and skin tissues transplanted into their bodies.
