The church of Saint John the Evangelist, in the Dorset village of Tincleton was built by the architect Benjamin Ferrey in 1849 in Victorian Gothic Revival style. The church was consecrated in 1850. Ferrey, a local man, was born in Christchurch in Hampshire. He was a very prolific architect designing many handsome buildings in Dorchester as well as having a great influence on the development and style of the burgeoning Victorian seaside resort of Bournemouth. His Gothic revival churches are dotted about all around England.
