Puffin (fratercula arctica) in flight over its Welsh habitat
A wild puffin comes in for a landing in its natural habitat on Skomer island, Wales. Puffins have short, stubby wings to give them better performance under water. This means their wings flutter rather than flap - they fly extremely fast for short distances, and are hard to track and photograph. Puffins face a barrage of threats in the modern world, from the constant attention of seagulls and other predators, to the destruction of their natural habitats by climate change and other human factors. Although numbers are fairly robust, a significant disaster in a heavily-populated area can spell disaster.
