Willit^m Tiernan was considered by some persons,as being the most gifted of Luke Tiernans children. He was a man of higb character, had a discrimin-ating and intelligent appreciation of Literature, andcontributed many Articles in the way of literary curi-osities, to the Catlwlir Mirror and other newspapers andMagazines over the signature P. N., from which he re-ceived the nickname of The Parson. He was very *Colonel L. T. He died iinmarried March 18, 1863,at the house of Mr. Pochon, on Saratoga near ParkStreet, where he lived for a number of years. Luke Tiernazst came to America about 178-1, andis believed to have settled first in Hagerstown ; prob-ably because some members of the family were alreadythere. Plis picture in this book is taken from a portraitof him, which was presented by C. B. Tiernan to theHibernian Society, and which is now deposited bythem in the Gallery of the Peabody Institute. The plate, and that of Charles Tiernan, were madefor a History of Baltimore, by S. B. Nelson, for whichC. B. Tiernan was requested to furnish a sketch of hisfamily, and these portraits. The picture of C. B. Tiernan, was taken from onemade for the Souvenir Volume of the New CourtHouse of Baltimore. Luke Tiernan had some literary taste and quite agood
