He came to New YorkCity while a youth, and obtained a situation as a clerkin a drug store. Here he applied himself closely tostudy, availing himself of the advantages of the nightschools, and thus secured a good business education. He was converted to Christ in his youth and unitedwith the M. E. Church. Feeling himself called topreach the gospel, he hesitated for some time whetherto enter the itinerancy, or engage in business andthereby secure financial ability to aid the cause of. REV. He decided upon the latter course, and becamean acceptable local minister while connected with theM. E. Church, and in the unstationed relaiion of theMethodist Protestant Church he was everywhere es-teemed as an able and worthy minister of Christ. In 1812 he was united in marriage with Miss MarthaBryan, au excellent Christian lady, and removed toPittsburgh, Pa., and engaged in the drug the war of that year he had invested his capi-tal in a small cargo of drugs, which with the vesselwas lost between New York and Philadelphia.
