Thomas Chamberlin. Portrait of Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin (1843-1928), American geologist. Chamb- erlin proposed that the Earth grew out of small bodies (planetesimals) being drawn together by gravitational attraction. Chamberlin argued that the Earth was much older than the figure of 100 million years which was widely accepted at the time. He recognised that there were complex inter- actions between geological, biological and chemical processes. He formed a theory on the origin of the Earth's atmosphere and was one of the first to suggest that carbon dioxide levels affected the climate. A prolific researcher, he had over 250 publications to his name.
