M. CANDY Westinghouse Electric «S: Manufacturing Company, Pittsbuigh, Pa. THREE views of three different truck frames whichare entirely welded, no rivets being used in theirconstruction, are shown in Fig. 1. This is apractice now being used to a certain extent by theGovernment Electric Railways of Sydney, journal boxes used with these trucks are also madeup completely by welding. Another interesting use ofarc welding on this property is in making gear cases,as pictured in Fig 2. Itwill be observed that notonly is the shell of thegear case welded but alsothe reinforcing strips onthe sides. The latter arewelded by what is knownas the plug weldingmethod, wherein metal isdeposited in small holesdrilled through the outerplate. These places can be. identified by the rough approximately circular spotsat various locations over these reinforcing plates. Asomewhat similar method of welding gear cases is usedby some of the large manufacturers here. Fig. 3 shows the bottom of a welded steel transformertank, which is a good illustration of a welding job thatcan be done more satisfactorily by the arc process thanby the gas process for the following reason: If thegas flame is played against the center of the Z-bars inorder to bring them to a welding temperatui-e for weld-ing the bracing strips the bars will become so badlyheated that they will buckle up in the center, making itpractically impossible to do a satisfactory job. In thecase of the arc process the arc heat is so concentratedand the weld can be made so rapidly that the entirejoints between the Z-bars and the bracing strips can bemade without throwing the Z-bars out of alignmentappreciably.
