THOROUGHPIN Is a distension of the hock through which the fluid bulgesbetween the os calcis. This shows first on one side and thenon the other, when the hock is pressed by the finger andthumb. Treatment.—Ellimans should be well rubbed on and aroundthe part every day until it is too sore to be continued, when itmust be left alone until the scurf raised is removed, and the sore-ness has subsided, when the rubbing as before may be repeatedif necessary. SIDE-BONES. The term side-bone is given to a conversion of the lateralcartilages into bone, which, instead of being flexible under thepressure, is found to be hard and unyielding. The cause is concussion on hard ground, and it is mostcommon to heavy horses. It is largely hereditary.
