Siam Burma Death Railway Hellfire Pass, Konyu Cutting

Hell Fire Pass as the PoW's Australians named it or Konyu cutting as the Japanese called it was the result of an engineering error by Japanese military engineers building the Siam-Burma Railway . Not deterred the Japanese put 1000 prisoners of war [ mostly Australian] to work to construct the cutting using forced labour and simple tools of hammer and tap. When complete at least 400 had died through abject brutality, hence the saying a man for every sleeper. Of those that survived most died elsewhere working on the Siam-Burma Death Railway.
