Macrophotograph of a female yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, showing blood from a human arm flowing up the slender stylets of the proboscis. The labium (a protective sheath) archs backward out of the way to allow the stylets to enter the skin. The female yellow fever mosquito is the carrier of an arbovirus, which causes the yellow fever disease, a once fatal & pervasive infection, now occurring in tropical Africa & parts of northern South America.
