Vintage print of famous bare-knuckle boxer Jem Mace (1831 - 1910) issuing a challenge to fellow fighters Tom Sayers (1826 - 1865) and John C Heenan (1834 - 1873).

Vintage print of famous bare-knuckle boxer Jem Mace (1831 - 1910) issuing a challenge to fellow fighters Tom Sayers (1826 - 1865) and John C Heenan (1834 - 1873). Mace (centre), who became Champion of England in 1861, offered the pair £1000 to fight him in a challenge issued at Owen Swift's in London on April 13 1862 but neither man fought him. Sayers, the then English Champion (left of print), and American Champion Heenan (right) had famously fought what is regarded as the first ever "world championship" battle at Farnborough, Hampshire, England, on April 17 1860 - a bout that ended in a draw after 42 rounds when spectators invaded the ring and police stopped proceedings. This print by The Courier Lithograph Company is a reproduction circa 1882 of a poster circulated in 1862 when Mace issued his challenge.
