Icing Wind Tunnel. Technicians with an aircraft model in the Icing Wind Tunnel (IWT), one of the facilities at CIRA, the Italian aerospace research centre. The IWT is a world-class facility that is the only one able to replicate the conditions of humidity, cold and wind, that are experienced by an aircraft at altitude. This allows tests to be carried out to see how ice forming on an aircraft can affect its performance, and tests are carried out on de-icing systems. The IWT conditions range from wind speeds of Mach , up to 7000 metres altitude, 70% to 100% humidity, and temperatures from -40 to 35 degrees Celsius. CIRA, founded in 1984, is in Padua, Italy.
