Haemorrhaging atheroma. Light micrograph of a section through an artery showing haemorrhage (bleeding, red) caused by an atheromatous plaque (light pink, lower right). An atheromatous plaque is the deposit of fatty material (lipids) on the inner walls of an artery. As this plaque enlarges, fibrous tissue is laid down, forming a fibrolipid atheromatous plaque. In established plaques of this type small thin walled capillaries are present. Rupture of the wall of one of these vessels may produce a small localised haemorrhage (bleeding).
